November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month
If you've been thinking about adding a four-legged member to your family, you shouldn't immediately look past the senior pets eagerly seeking a furever home. Odds are, these guys haven't had it easy and their chances of being adopted are lower than a puppy's or kitten's. However, a senior pet can show you just as much love and affection and comes without all the training needs or destructive phase. Senior pets are usually house-broken, trained, and you can tell their personality traits right off.
November is National Adopt a Senior Pet Month. So, this month, we are showcasing senior dog rescues and ways to give an older dog or cat a lovely life and furever home with your family.
As their website proudly states, "Susie’s Senior Dogs is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization working to bring awareness to the plight of homeless senior dogs. Because of their age, senior dogs are most often overlooked by adopters. People fear adopting senior dogs for a number of reasons, but we’re here to tell a different story. They have so much love to give! Senior dogs make wonderful companions and they simply need to be given the chance."
With four dog-loving members on the board, they work hand-in-hand to ensure that they find perfect homes of their senior dogs, running matchmaking services, spearheading public adoptions, and running very active influencer Facebook and Instagram accounts that give global access to pet lovers looking to adopt or donate.
Like Susie's Senior Dogs, Muttville passionately strives to help senior dogs find forever homes instead of facing the heart-wrenching possibly of unnecessary euthanasia.
"Muttville’s mission is to change the way the world thinks about and treats older dogs and to create better lives for them through rescue, foster, adoption, hospice, education, and advocacy."
Muttville offers hospice care for dogs that are not adoptable. It also showcases adoptable senior and hospice dogs on their website. Similarly, Muttville offers a "Seniors for Seniors" program. This program includes a waved adoption fee and a month of supplies for those that qualify.
If you don't live in NYC or San Francisco, never fear! You can find a local senior adoption near you. If there aren't any senior rescues near you, we guarantee you can find a grateful and loving senior pet that needs you at your local shelter or humane society.
